February is a month that many girls and women look forward to every year! We love the treats of gifts and attention, especially because Valentine’s Day is in February. February is such a dreary month. The weather is bad and we are all ready for Winter to be over.
I’ve always loved Valentine’s Day, even though I sometimes pretend it’s not a big deal. I might say I don’t need more chocolates or flowers that will wilt soon, but the truth is, I DO want those things. Even if they come from the grocery store at the last minute. It is the THOUGHT that counts!! I just want to know that my love notices me on Valentine’s Day!
Do you ever wonder HOW Valentine’s Day started?
Valentine’s Day is always on February 14th every year. A long time ago, the ancient Romans had a holiday in mid-February called Lupercalia. It is famous for celebrating things like fertility. During this holiday, men and women became couples by drawing names from a jar. OK, that’s just a little weird!! Some people think this could be how Valentine’s Day became a day about love. In ancient Greece, they had a mid-winter celebration for the marriage of the god Zeus and the goddess Hera. So, people from long ago were also celebrating love in their own ways. That’s why it makes sense that we connect Valentine’s Day with love. Love makes the world go ’round! RIGHT?
Who was Saint Valentine? (And what does he have to do with chocolate hearts?)
Saint Valentine’s Day originally started as a special day in the Catholic Church to honor saints named Valentine who died for their beliefs. There are a few different stories about three saints with the name Valentine or Valentinus. We do not know much about them, and the details are a bit confusing. Because of this, the day is not an official celebration in the Christian calendar anymore.
Even though we don’t know a lot about the real Saint Valentine, there are some legends about him. One story says that Saint Valentine would not give up his Christian faith, so the Roman Emperor Claudius II gave the command for his execution. Another legend talks about a bishop named Saint Valentine of Terni. He was also an inspiration for the Holiday. The Emperor sent him to his execution as well. Though we are not sure why.
Some people believe that Saint Valentine’s connection to love is because he was secretly performing weddings for soldiers. By decree, the Emperor did not allow soldiers to marry. He even wore a ring with Cupid on it—a symbol of love—to help soldiers recognize him. He also handed out paper hearts to remind Christians to love God. Because of these actions, Saint Valentine became known as the patron saint of love.
A writer named Geoffrey Chaucer wrote a poem in 1381 that made the connection between Saint Valentine and romantic love even stronger.
What is the meaning of Valentine’s Day?
Over the years, Valentine’s Day has been a religious celebration, an ancient ritual, and now a commercial holiday. This means that the meaning of Valentine’s Day can be whatever you want it to be. You can skip the celebrations, buy yourself some chocolate or flowers, or show love and appreciation for the people in your life—whether they’re friends, family, or someone you care about romantically. The point of Valentine’s Day is to simply celebrate love! AND I think that should be on the top of everyone’s list!
