Father’s Day

Father’s Day is a day to honor the special men in our lives. These are the people who have helped shape us into who we are. It’s a time to say thank you for all the hard work, advice, and support they’ve given us. If you’re looking for a great gift for Dad, you’re in the right place!

My Story

Father’s Day is sometimes a bit tricky for me. My dad was in the military, so he wasn’t around a lot when I was young. When I was 12, my parents divorced, and when I was 15, my dad passed away. Growing up, I didn’t have much of a father figure in my life. I was lucky to have friends’ dads who treated me like family, and I really enjoyed that. But Father’s Day was still a tough day.

When I met my future husband’s dad, Gordon, everything changed. We got along right away, and I started to understand what it was like to have a father figure. I also met his stepdad, Tom, who made me feel even more connected to the idea of having a father. While they weren’t the traditional fathers you see in old-fashioned stories, they filled that space in my heart. Both Gordon and Tom are gone now, but I will always hold them close in my heart.

History of Father’s Day

Father’s Day began on June 19, 1910, in Washington state. However, it didn’t become a national holiday until 1972.

The idea started earlier, in 1908, when a church in West Virginia held an event to honor fathers. It was in memory of 362 men who died in a coal mine explosion. But it was a one-time event, not meant to become an annual holiday.

In 1909, Sonora Dodd, from Spokane, Washington, wanted to make Father’s Day a regular holiday. She was raised by her father after her mom passed away, so she wanted to celebrate dads. She got help from churches, businesses, and local leaders to make it happen. Washington state celebrated the first official Father’s Day on June 19, 1910.

Over time, more people started celebrating.. In 1916, President Wilson even used telegraph signals to unfurl a flag for Father’s Day in Spokane, from Washington, D.C.! By 1924, President Calvin Coolidge asked all states to celebrate it.

Father’s Day: A Bumpy Road

Not everyone was excited about Father’s Day at first. Some men felt like the holiday made them seem too soft or that it was just another day to spend money. In the 1920s and 1930s, there were even groups that wanted to combine Mother’s Day and Father’s Day into one holiday, called “Parents’ Day.” Every year, people would rally in Central Park in New York City to support this idea.

But when the Great Depression hit, retailers wanted to boost sales, so they pushed for Father’s Day. They advertised gifts like ties, socks, and sporting goods. During World War II, advertisers changed their tune and said Father’s Day was a way to honor American soldiers. After the war, Father’s Day wasn’t yet a national holiday, but it was celebrated all over the country. In 1972, President Richard Nixon made Father’s Day a federal holiday, and today, Americans spend over $1 billion on Father’s Day gifts.
