Now, for me, Father’s Day is a difficult day to wrap my head around. My father was in the military, so he was not around much when I was small, and then my parents divorced when I was 12. After that, my father passed away when I was 15. So, I grew up largely without a father figure in my life. Sure, I had many friends father’s who treated me like their own, and I absolutely reveled in it! But this ONE day of the year, was always a challenge.

When I met what would be my future husband’s father, Gordon, I instantly took to him. We hit it off immediately! We could talk about almost anything. Then I began to understand what having a father meant. I also met his step father, Tom, and things really fell into place in the father category. While neither man was a traditional “Father” as you look at the old fashioned father role, they filled my need for a father figure in my life. Someone to talk to, ask questions, laugh with, look to for guidance, and generally feel “part of the family”. While they are both gone now, they will both forever live in my heart.

History of Father’s Day

The nation’s first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in the state of Washington. However, it would be 58 years later in1972 that Father’s Day would become a National holiday.

On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation’s first event. This was explicitly in honor of fathers. It was in memory of the death of 362 men in the previous December’s explosions at a nearby coal mine. But it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday.

The next year, Sonora Dodd, from Spokane, Washington, tried to establish an official equivalent to Mother’s Day for male parents. She was one of six children raised by a widower. She went to local churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers and government officials to drum up support for her idea. And she was successful: Washington State celebrated the nation’s first statewide Father’s Day on June 19, 1910.

Slowly, the holiday spread. In 1916, President Wilson honored the day by using telegraph signals to unfurl a flag in Spokane, just by pressing a button in Washington, D.C. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge urged state governments to observe Father’s Day.

Father’s Day: Controversy and Commercialism

Many men, however, continued to disdain the day. Many people did not like the idea of Father’s Day. There was a feeling that the men’s masculinity was being domesticated. And that it was just another commercial holiday that they would end up buying their own gift!

During the 1920s and 1930s, many people wanted to just combine the two holidays into one. Why not just celebrate a “Parent’s Day”. Every year on Mother’s Day there would be pro-Parents’ Day groups rallies in New York City’s Central Park. This was always a public reminder, that both parents should be loved and respected together.

Paradoxically, however, the Great Depression derailed this effort to combine and de-commercialize the holidays. Struggling retailers and advertisers redoubled their efforts to make Father’s Day a “second Christmas” for men. They were promoting goods such as neckties, hats, socks, pipes and tobacco, golf clubs and other sporting goods, and greeting cards just to boost sales.

When World War II began, the tactics change again. The advertisers began to argue that celebrating Father’s Day was a way to honor American troops. By the end of the war, Father’s Day may not have been a federal holiday, but it was a national institution.

In 1972, in the middle of a hard-fought presidential re-election campaign, Richard Nixon signed a proclamation. He was making Father’s Day a federal holiday, at last. Today, economists estimate that Americans spend more than $1 billion each year on Father’s Day gifts.
